Questions

What is your current career stage and what can help you unlock your next level?
Moving here to Dubai I am genuinely interested in networking within the architecture and art scene. I hope connecting through the 1833 club could enhance my understanding of the community, from the experience I have had attending some of the events so far, it's been fruitful. Events on art, architecture, and urban experiences and the latest developments in Dubai and the UAE could help positively bridge the gap between perceptions and reality, showcasing the region's architectural advancements and identity. Sharing knowledge, especially in this space with this community, is elemental for growth and exploration.
Why would you want to join 1833/١٨٣٣?
1833 has been a great introduction to the creative community in Dubai. I've met some interesting members and got exposed to events that enriched my knowledge of artists and creative individuals. I hope to contribute to this community. While I’m uncertain how my current experience aligns, I have previously been involved in distantly similar communities and sharing some of those may invoke some ideas. I am a member of SOHO House in Hong Kong, where we organized workshops and art events with guest lecturers sharing insights on breakthrough installations or projects. This engagement led to my involvement through community connections as a guest lecturer at Hong Kong University, where I oversaw Design Studio II, helping students balance realism with conceptual exploration. Additionally, I participated in a social and architectural community in Vietnam called Talks, where we hosted events exploring art and architecture's impact on communities. We discussed topics such as Hassan Fathy’s endeavors in Egypt, Critical Regionalism in the Global South, and the pursuit of identity post-colonialism, we'd produced publications for each talk for sharing and documentation purposes. Collaboration with Nem Space, led to a series of off-record film viewings in Saigon and Hong Kong, showcasing Palestinian cinema and exploring the historic relationship between Vietnam and Palestine. This initiative highlighted shared experiences of resistance, fostering a sense of solidarity among participants. It also resulted in serving as a guest juror and lecturer at RMIT's interior and architecture program. In Egypt, working with the remarkable architect Abdelhalim Ibrahim involved active participation in numerous cultural events at Cairo University and AUC. This collaboration included curating events and hosting others, promoting unity and understanding in the community. This was made easier as, at the time, I was a teaching assistant with Magda Mostafa at AUC, publications such as "Sessions with Abdelhalim" and "Architecture of Collective Memory", his autobiography, emerged from these efforts through AUC Press. Prior to this, engagement with Cluster Cairo focused on critical discourse in urban practices and participatory design. Direct work on mapping Downtown Cairo's passageways and social development initiatives contributed to several publications, including the Creative Urban Initiatives Platform and the Cluster Mapping Initiative. Simply put - I see 1833 as a good intro to a cool community and I hope to add value to its already rich tapestry.
What are your creative interests? How do you spend your free time?
I've always had a longstanding interest in collective efforts to advance culture in the Global South and the WANA region. I’m passionate about dedicating my time and energy to ensure true representation and diversity in Global South in all its intangible heritage. I have a knack for being actively engaged in events, connecting with others, and diving into deep discussions. As an architect, I love design and piecing together elements to create something whole. Film and music are my jam! I was part of organizing the Palestinian Film Festival in Hong Kong and Vietnam over the past two years, showcasing a borrowed library from the Palestinian Film Foundation to raise awareness. I’m drawn to films that delve into unique human experiences. I also enjoy reading and think a book club is always fantastic! I’d love to explore topics of interest and share insights. My reading mostly focuses on history, art, psychology, sociology, and anthropology—basically, the humanities. Looking forward to connecting with 1833.
