What is your current career stage and what can help you unlock your next level?
My day job is in public health and healthcare management. I founded a consultancy and I am currently pursuing my doctorate in public health at the London school of hygiene. I am looking for a way to engage creatives and creatively to support community wellbeing and social cohesion. I believe ‘art and design’ is a portal into realising that.
Why would you want to join 1833/١٨٣٣?
I live in two worlds, both in where I was raised, my work and free time, and now with my cross cultural marriage. I believe in building relationships and learning from others. I would like to share my world view and creative approach with reviving traditional weaving techniques and at the same time learn from others and their mediums. I would be keen to teach and share through classes or huddles that bring people together to learn and discuss.
What are your creative interests? How do you spend your free time?
Growing up in a small town in the UK to Saudi-Iraqi parents, I was always curious about my heritage. We grew up with our culture, language and food. I took up embroidery from a young age and eventually Persian carpet weaving. I embroider canvases, clothes, you name it! And I hand weave carpets on my looms, usually with a traditional backdrop but contemporary or spiritual design/influence. I have recently married and moved to Dubai, where my husband is from. So I’m taking the time to explore the city and find my niche here. I’m looking to heritage in the city to inspire my work and also find the familiarity of the Arab world I inherited.
